DUBAI: Etihad Rail has announced the UAE’s first high-speed passenger train, a project poised to reshape travel between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

This ambitious initiative, revealed at an official ceremony in Al Faya Depot, marks a significant advancement in the nation’s transportation infrastructure.

With support from key leaders, including Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, the project demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to innovation and sustainable development.

High-speed connectivity

The high-speed train is designed to dramatically cut travel time between Abu Dhabi and Dubai to just 30 minutes, reaching speeds of up to 350 km/h. Strategically planned stops along the route include iconic destinations such as Yas Island, Saadiyat, Reem Island, and Zayed International Airport, ensuring seamless connections for residents, tourists, and business travellers.

This new rail service represents more than just convenience – it symbolises the UAE’s vision of integrating advanced transport solutions to strengthen its position as a global leader in mobility.

Environmental and economic impact

Aligned with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, the high-speed train is powered by electricity, reinforcing the country’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions and fostering sustainable economic growth. Over the next 50 years, the project is expected to contribute Dh145 billion to the national GDP, highlighting its potential to drive business, tourism, and logistics growth.

The train will also improve quality of life by reducing travel times, easing congestion, and offering a reliable alternative to road transport. In doing so, it will enhance socioeconomic ties between the UAE’s two largest emirates.

Integrated passenger rail services

In addition to the high-speed rail, Etihad Rail is introducing a regular-speed passenger train network that will connect all seven emirates. Travelling at speeds of up to 200 km/h, the passenger train will eventually link urban centres to the wider GCC region, creating a comprehensive rail system for the future.

The first phase of the project includes passenger rail stations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah. These stations will integrate with existing metro and bus services, providing commuters with a fully interconnected transport network. Designed to reflect Emirati heritage, the stations will feature family-friendly amenities, business-class lounges, and retail outlets.

Strategic milestones

A Cooperation Charter was signed during the announcement ceremony by representatives from the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and the Dubai Executive Council. This agreement underscores the commitment of both emirates to collaborate on advancing infrastructure and ensuring the smooth execution of the rail project.

Tenders have already been issued for key project contracts, and work on the high-speed train’s infrastructure is progressing steadily. These efforts pave the way for the final stages of development, ensuring the system’s timely rollout.

A glimpse into the future

During the event, the UAE’s leadership reviewed the newly unveiled passenger train fleet, which is set to complement the high-speed rail. Designed with cutting-edge features, the trains will offer a comfortable and efficient travel experience, supporting Etihad Rail’s mission to deliver state-of-the-art transportation services.
